Shaving, Waxing, At Home Hair Removal

At home hair removal products like “Nair” last longer than shaving, but contain toxic chemicals. Waxing pulls the hair follicle out from the root, giving you the longest amount of time feeling hair free.

Hair Removal Creams

These at home hair removal creams may seem like the easy way out…

Hair removal creams, also known as depilatory creams, have chemicals in them that dissolve hair just below the surface of the skin. While these chemicals are effective at removing hair, they may also cause a few unwanted reactions. Another thing to keep in mind is that hair removal creams were originally developed with arm and leg hair in mind.

  • May experience an allergic reaction

  • Lingering unpleasant chemical smell

  • Skin irritation that may itch and burn

Most products at home creams offer smooth skin for up to 3 days. Depilatory creams might offer you an extra day. On average, you will have to apply the cream again in 5 days max.

SHAVING

There are a number of side effects to be aware of. These include cuts, abrasions, irritation, and ingrown hairs (also known as 'razor bumps' or pseudofolliculitis). Many of these side effects can be minimized by using a new blade EVERY shave, applying plenty of lubrication, and not pressing on too hard with the blade.

Many people believe that shaving causes hair to grow back thicker and darker. However, this is not the case (just an old myth). It only appears to be thicker and darker as the shaven body hair has a blunt thick end, rather than a lighter tapered end, as new hairs have. Clinical studies have proven that shaving does not have any effect on the speed of hair growth, or the amount of growth.

  • Cuts-taking an average 15 days to heal

  • Razor Burn-irritation of the skin caused by shaving sensitive areas or not using a good technique

  • Ingrown Hairs-“Razor bumps” (also called pseudofolliculitis) are hairs that either grow into the wall of the follicle or leave the follicle and curl back and penetrate into the skin.

Shaving only removes hair at the surface of the skin, so it doesn't have to grow much to resurface. Most women will find they have to shave every one to three days if they want to keep their skin smooth.

Waxing

There is a good reason why regrowth seems slower when you wax: the hair is pulled from the root. Your skin will remain smooth for a period of time that spans from the renewal of the ripped hair follicle to the moment the hair shaft reaches the skin surface. This whole process usually lasts three to four weeks, the average time that goes by between waxing appointments. On the contrary, when you shave, the razor is only cutting the hair shaft on the skin's surface. As you can imagine, this is the same reason why everyone will ask you to stay away from the razor if you've chosen to wax regularly. The rhythm of hair removal with the waxing appointments can be disrupted if you cut hair at the surface. At the end of the day, you will definitely see less regrowth once you start waxing consistently, and this is one of the best advantages you can get from it.

Your hair will grow back progressively finer and sparser

This is because waxing tears hair off from the root, which causes the hair follicle to get weaker over time. Weak hair follicles produce finer, sparser hair. However, genetics still determines most of the characteristics of your hair, such as coarseness, color, and growth rate. Do not expect dramatic change from coarse to fine in a couple appointments. It will take some time to see a change.

Your skin will get gentle exfoliation

Waxing strips off the outermost layer of skin, which means that your skin will feel smoother and brighter, but keep in mind that waxing is not exfoliation. In fact, it is highly advisable that you exfoliate a couple of days before your waxing appointment to prepare the skin for the procedure. Do not exfoliate on the same day of the appointment since this could make your skin too sensitive. A couple of days after the appointment, you can wax again: any redness will more than likely have subsided by then, and pores will be closed. Post-waxing exfoliation is one of the ways to keep ingrown hairs at bay.
