Alpha Hydroxy Acid & Beta Hydroxy Acid

AHA’s are mild acids, glycolic acid being the strongest of the AHAs. BHAs are milder than AHAs and EFFECTIVELY exfoliate the skin.

AHA

Penetrates the corneum via the intercellular mix and loosens the bonds between the cells. Glycolic acid can penetrate into the epidermis more effectively because it has the smallest molecular size of the AHA’s. Glycolic acid is derived from sugar cane.

Uses

  • Mild hyperpigmentation like age spots, scars

  • Enlarged pores

  • Fine lines and surface wrinkles

  • Uneven skin tone

Included in the AHA family

  • Glycolic acid-sugar cane

  • Lactic acid-milk

  • Tartaric acid-grapes

  • Citric acid-citrus fruit

  • Malic acid-apples

  • Mandelic acid-almond extract

BHA

Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) are milder than AHA’s. Salicylic acid is the most common BHA and is used to dissolve oil and is used on oily and acne skin. Salicylic acid is derived from sweet birch, willow bark, and wintergreen.

Uses

  • Treat acne

  • Sun damage

Included in the AHA family

  • Salicylic acid

  • Some Citrus fruit acids

AHAs and BHAs share similar benefits. You can obtain the same level of exfoliation from each. A BHA may be better suited if you want to calm down inflammation and get rid of acne.
