Natural Remedies for Dry Scalp

What are natural remedies to soothe a dry scalp?
Applying oils to the scalp can help by restoring moisture to the skin. Argan oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil and neem oil are the ones most often recommended.
What about tea tree oil?
Tea tree oil is the most widely studied essential oil for mild to moderate dandruff, and it turns up in plenty of shampoos, conditioners and scalp products. Do not apply it neat: it is a potent essential oil and undiluted use is a common cause of contact dermatitis. Dilute it in a carrier oil or mix a few drops into your shampoo, let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes, and patch test before you commit. Give any routine a few weeks before you judge it.
Does diet make a difference?
Omega-3 fatty acids support skin health generally, scalp included. You will find them in cod liver oil and krill oil supplements, and naturally in flaxseeds and oily fish such as salmon, sardines, tuna, mackerel and herring. Talk to your doctor before starting a supplement, particularly if you take other medication.
What about apple cider vinegar?
Apple cider vinegar is the kitchen remedy people reach for most. It is acidic, which is thought to help restore the scalp’s pH and discourage the overgrowth of Malassezia furfur, a yeast-like fungus associated with dandruff. Dilute it well with water in a spray bottle, coat the scalp, and rinse after 15 minutes to an hour. Never apply it undiluted, and skip it entirely if your scalp is broken or actively irritated.
What should you know before using natural remedies?
Natural does not mean harmless. Essential oils in particular are a common source of allergic reactions, so patch test everything. Dry scalp is often just a cosmetic issue, but it can also be a symptom of a condition such as psoriasis, and untreated it can lead to severe itching and a raised risk of infection. If your dry scalp persists, see a physician rather than self-treating.
