Everything you need to know before your spray tan appointment at Refined with Caroline in Rock Hill, SC.
Common Questions
Exfoliate your skin thoroughly 24 hours before your appointment. Shave or wax 12 hours before your appointment. On the day of your appointment, arrive with clean, dry skin: no lotions, deodorant, perfume, or makeup. Wear loose, dark clothing to your session.
You can wear whatever you are comfortable in during your session. Most clients wear a swimsuit, undergarments, or go without, and it is completely up to you. Bring loose, dark clothing and flip-flops or sandals for after your tan.
A typical spray tan session takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Plan to arrive a few minutes early so we can discuss your desired shade and any questions you have.
The application is the same for both. The difference is how long the solution stays on your skin before you rinse. A Standard tan develops for 8 to 10 hours before your first shower. An Express tan develops for 2 to 4 hours before your first shower.
A spray tan is a sunless tan: color develops on the surface of the skin, with no UV exposure. Our spray tans use professional-grade DHA (dihydroxyacetone), a sugar-derived ingredient that reacts with the outer layer of your skin. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a skin condition, or have known sensitivities or allergies, check with your healthcare provider first and let Caroline know when you book so she can review the formula with you.
As a licensed esthetician, Caroline matches the solution and the depth of color to your skin tone. That is what separates a professional airbrush tan from a home self-tanner. If you have had an orange or streaky result somewhere else, tell Caroline when you book and she will adjust the shade and the application for you.
Most spray tans last 5 to 7 days with proper care. Your tan will gradually fade as your skin naturally exfoliates. Following the aftercare tips below will help you get the longest-lasting results.
Caroline selects the solution and shade to suit your skin, and works with a wide range of skin tones and types. Let Caroline know about any skin sensitivities or allergies when you book so she can select the solution she recommends for you.
It depends on which tan you booked. After a Standard tan, wait 8 to 10 hours before your first shower. After an Express tan, wait 2 to 4 hours. Your first rinse should be a quick, lukewarm water-only rinse: no soap, body wash, or scrubbing. This lets the DHA finish developing.
Wait until the next day, about 24 hours after your tan, before you shave again. Shaving exfoliates the skin and lifts color. When you do shave, use a sharp razor, go gently, and skip harsh scrubs.
Moisturize daily with an oil-free moisturizer, especially after showering. Avoid long hot showers, chlorine, and exfoliating products. Pat your skin dry instead of rubbing. Avoid tight clothing that causes friction on the skin.
Avoid sweating, swimming, and any activities that cause excessive moisture while your tan is developing: 8 to 10 hours for a Standard tan, 2 to 4 hours for an Express tan. After your first rinse, you can resume normal activities, but keep in mind that chlorine and salt water will cause your tan to fade faster.
